Lines, Composed upon Viewing Two Lovers in the Forest

Out of my square kitchen window I looked,
and saw two lovers who were in the wrong.
I thought of the pair of chickens I cooked
and suddenly started singing this song.

"Chickens, now dance at the sound of my gong!
If not, you shall find yourself bodiless!
Move your feet and your whole body along
or, my dear chickens, your soul you will miss!"

This ballad seemed odd. I wondered at this
and decided to eat then, if I could.
Despite my hunger, I would be remiss
if I left the two lovebirds in the wood.

I want to eat the chickens, a little;
if only my teeth were not so brittle.

Ah, The Poetics.
