Ivan the Not-so Terrible

Hey guys! I’m coming to you live from a car on the way from Tuscaloosa to Auburn! It’s been one crazy week/end, and it isn’t even Saturday yet. Here’s how it all went down.

It all started Tuesday night, when classes at Auburn were cancelled until the next Monday due to Hurricane Ivan concerns. So I had no choice but to either stay in the dorm, where it could and probably would be quite boring, or go on a crazy road trip to end all road trips. Well, not that crazy, but crazy enough to write about on here. Well, I stayed up nearly all night watching Fight Club, playing Texas Hold ‘Em in the lobby, and generally standing around in the true Willie Little lobby spirit.

I went to my room at around 2:30, planning on going to sleep for a trip that morning to Birmingham. Well, then I realized that I probably needed to make a list of things to take before I went to bed. But I didn’t have any light with which to make said list. So I went into the hall. And lo and behold, I heard the glorious sound of someone spawning in Halo. I gave into temptation and played about thirty minutes of Halo with the lobby regulars. Then I really did go to sleep.

I woke up at about 7:30 AM, pondering on whether or not to go to B-Ham to chill with Daniel Jones and the Bogan at UAB. As my ride was leaving at 9 AM, I didn’t have much time to decide. Obviously, I went, because otherwise there’d be nothing to write about. Anyway, around 11:30 AM I show up in Birmingham with all my stuff, including my sombrero and prom king crown. Lunch with Daniel and Bogan at a Chick-fil-A that had service about four times slower than the one I used to work at. A bunch of peole either stared at the sombrero I was wearing, laughed about it to themselves, or told me it ruled. Then the fun began.

Bogan had a calculus test, so I went and took it with her. It was on limits, which I never was good at in the first place, so I just put some funny answers on the ones I didn’t know. I wrote “Douglas Adams” as my name on the test, too. Then I walked up to turn in my test, and the professor asked me, “Do you have your homework?” I replied, “No.” She just gave me a dull look and put my test on the stack. Unfortunately, Bogan doesn’t know the grade yet. I wish I could be there to see the look on the professor’s face when she realizes that someone took the test that isn’t even registered for the class.

Then, after passing a bunch of random Bob Jones people, we went to the dorm: Rast Hall. I can’t say I liked it as much as the good ‘ol Willie Little, but it was still all right. We tried to sneak past the desk assistant, but Lincoln was too loud about me not living there, so one of the resident assistants ran up the stairs and made us come back and sign me in. Sheesh.

This whole time, all my stuff was sitting in Charles’ car, who was at class or something. So for a while all I had was a sombrero. Daniel Jones, Awesome Daniel, Chris (who was leaving), and I all played Super Smash Brothers on Nintendo 64. I did so well that Chris declared me the only person worthy of challenging him. It was definitely good times.

Later, we went to the good ‘ol UAB Taco Bell, which was a rad place all around. This kid kept bothering us with this weird Taco Bell cyclops plastic toy, though, which was weird. Afterwards, we went to Bogan’s room, where I played Rad Racer on the original Nintendo (one of the greatest games ever) and became incredible at it. Unfortunately, even with the turbo, I could never get past the fifth track (there were eight). Also, Jeopardy was on. That Ken Jennings sure is annoying, in a way. Bogan and I played some hardcore Donkey Kong Country 2 and talked about the days of old at Bob Jones.

Then I went to sleep, first planning to do so in Bogan’s room. I ended up in the common room of Daniel’s suite on some couch that was way too short from me. So I curled up into a little ball and slept my heart out, when I wasn’t waking up at random times. Then the fire alarms started going off around 12, because the power was going on and off. It was raining and just generally miserable outside. The hurricane didn’t even get past Mobile, hardly. By this point it was just a tropical storm.

We hung out in the dorm room a lot, but most of it was actually sort of dull. Everyone just hung out and stuff. I watched Office Space for the first time ever, which, oddly enough, I didn’t think was very good. Daniel made pizza rolls, which were good to eat. And one of the girls in Bogan’s room had a stash of Mountain Dew about twice as large as the one in my dorm room. So I guess all in all it was OK, but it wasn’t enough action for me. So a plan was formulated.

The idea had been mulling about in my head to go to Tuscaloosa during the weekend as well, since it was only about an hour away from Birmingham. A guy in my dorm named Chris had told me he was going to Tuscaloosa for the weekend and coming back Friday afternoon. So I figured if I could get there and find him, I’d have a ride back to Auburn in time for marching band practice for the football game Saturday at 8 AM.

However, a slight problem arose. Daniel said he’d drive me to Tuscaloosa, but during my viewing of the current night’s edition of Jeopardy, a weather announcement stated that there might be flash flooding on the way. Well, we all talked it over and decided to go anyway. So Daniel, Awesome Daniel, Bogan, and I all piled into Daniel’s Civic and headed off onto the highway...

We arrived in Tuscaloosa around 8:30 PM, and after a trip to Arby’s, finally hooked up with Chris from the Dorm and threw my stuff in his friend Anthony’s room. Then, after doing some looking up of information, I found out the phone numbers of my cousins and another friend. I called up my cousins and hooked up with them at their dorm. Then Chris called with some bad news. He didn’t know that he was my ride back to Auburn. Luckily, he got it all worked out all right, because I went.

Anyway, then my other friend Laura called. I was trying to surprise her, but oh well, because I didn’t really know where her dorm was. So I told her I was in town, and she was all excited. I went over to her dorm, which also had a cool lobby group. We played some Texas Hold ‘Em (deja-vu?) and watched some movies. Afterwards, I played some board games with the hall director and some of his friends, which ruled. Then I went to sleep in the bed of some drunk guy who passed out at a frat house. Oh yeah, truth to tell, they were watching Office Space during one of the games (deja-vu again?).

Anyway, the next morning I woke up at about 12:30 and got cleaned up, then went to Laura’s room until about 1:30 PM, when Chris and his friend Karl came to take me back to Willie Little. Maybe not the craziest road trip possible, but it was cool to see some Bob Jones people and have somewhat of a good time doing it.

Anyway, until next time…
